The Tale of the Humble Snake Plant
Fable Short Story: The Tale of the Humble Snake Plant
“The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are.” – Carl Jung
Once upon a time in a green jungle, there was a humble creature, called Snake Plant. He had tall, green leaves that stood straight and strong, but he felt like no one paid much attention to him. One day, Snake Plant was quietly enjoying some soft sunlight. A group of animals nearby—Mousedeer, Orangutan, and Bull were playing near him.
“Don’t eat my leaves,” Snake Plant warned them softly. “They may be toxic for you.”
Bull snorted scornfully, “You have no value, Snake Plant. You’re useless and have no value.”
Snake Plant sighed, feeling the weight of Bull’s harsh words. He often felt unloved and forgotten, with little water to quench his thirst and scarce sunlight to warm his leaves.
Mousedeer’s Encouragement
Seeing the sadness in Snake Plant’s face, Mousedeer came closer with gentle eyes. “You don’t need too much attention, and that’s actually your strength,” Mousedeer said. “You do well with just a little water and sunlight. You have strong fibers and a strong heart.”
Mousedeer continued, “You have your own unique abilities. Perhaps it’s time for some self-discovery.”
Snake Plant minded these words, feeling a glimmer of hope spark within.
A Call to Action
Not long after, a problem arose in the jungle. A foul smell had overtaken a nearby cave, making it unbearable for the animals to gather there. Desperate for a solution, Mousedeer turned to Snake Plant.
“Could you help us, Snake Plant?” Mousedeer asked. “The cave reeks, and we wonder if you can tolerate it while performing a special task.”
Snake Plant nodded, “I will do my best. I am strong, even when lacking water, attention, and sunshine.”
“Trust in yourself,” Mousedeer whispered. “You might discover your true power and uniqueness.”
Discovering Inner Strength

With determination, Snake Plant was placed inside the cave. Left alone with just his thoughts, he started to practice breathing exercises and meditation. Unknowingly, the Snake Plant was absorbing the bad air and releasing fresh, clean air. He did it again and again to purify the air. Day by day, the cave’s bad smell disappeared.
The animals went back into the cave and were surprised to find the air fresh and pleasant. Thankful for Snake Plant’s quiet action, they gave him some clean water and said kind words to show their appreciation.
A Newfound Purpose
Mousedeer praised Snake Plant, “You have served us well, prioritizing the needs of others above your own. You have used your unique natural ability to purify the air to help others.”
Snake Plant understood that his real value was not about being recognized, but in its authenticity and selfless contributions. With a newfound sense of purpose, Snake Plant stood taller than ever, knowing he had made a difference in the lives of those around him.
And so, in the heart of the jungle, the humble Snake Plant found its place, teaching all that true value comes from being true to oneself and serving others with a generous heart.
